Different Types of Locks

12/22/2013 Back To Blog

Everyone wants to keep their homes safe at all times. Be it to prevent burglaries and break-ins, or to simply avoid accidents, we all understand the importance of security, even if you are in a safe neighborhood. There are a number of different types of locks your home can have; no lock is the same and it is often recommended that you use more than one type of lock for your home.Different Types of Locks

Locks have become an essential part of our lives

* Knob locks are used as a source of security for doors and are commonly found in residential areas. It is suggested that this lock should not be used on external doors as a security measure. As the lock mechanism is in the knob itself, it can be easily bypassed through the use of a pair of pliers, a wrench, or even a hammer. If you intend to use knob locks, consider pairing them with deadbolts for optimum security.

* Lever handle locks are often used for the inner doors of a home. Instead of grasping the handle, this type employs a push down style, making them easy to open. When considering this type of lock, keep in mind that the lever can be susceptible to torque attacks, like using excessive pressure to force the lock open.

* Rim cylinder and Mortise cylinder locks are usually found on different kinds of doors, including commercial doors, entry glass doors, and even apartment doors. Both these locks have their similarities, but their hardware is greatly different from each other. The rim cylinder lock is held in place by two screws and has a long metal piece that extends through the rear. On the other hand, the Mortise cylinder lock is threaded. It also makes use of a cam to actuate the locking mechanism.
